Omega 3: What is it, where does it come from?
Fatty acids are labelled “essential” when they cannot be synthesised or made by the body. They are thus “essential” in the same way that vitamins are?.
There are two types of omega 3:
– long-chain omega 3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA), which come from the sea (algae and fish) or from a vegetable oil (linseed oil and camelina oil). EPA and DHA are called “active omega 3”.
– short-chain omega 3 fatty acids (ALA), which are found in fresh vegetable and only when they are fresh. They are precursors that enzymes in the body transform into long-chain omega 3 fatty acids. The bio-availability of ALA in the body is fairly low. That means that large amounts must be consumed to achieve interesting omega 3 levels in the body.
A horse that grazes in a pasture thus takes in a lot of omega 3 (ALA) and its omega 6/omega 3 ratio is an ideal 4:1. A horse that is kept stabled has a completely imbalanced omega 6/omega 3 ratio of 16:1.
